Cookie Policy

1. What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files placed on your device (computer, tablet, or phone) when you visit a website. They allow the website to recognise your device and remember certain information about your visit — such as whether you have logged in, your preferences, or your consent choices.

Cookies are not programmes and cannot run code. They cannot carry viruses or install software on your device. They are simply text files that websites read to provide a better, more personalised experience.

Similar technologies include web beacons (also called tracking pixels), local storage, and session storage. Where this policy refers to "cookies", it also covers these similar technologies.

2. Who Sets Cookies on Deaku?

When you visit deaku.org or use the Deaku application, cookies may be set by:

This policy covers both first-party and third-party cookies placed in connection with the Deaku website and platform.

3. Categories of Cookies We Use

We classify our cookies into four categories based on their purpose:

3.1 Strictly Necessary Cookies

These cookies are essential for the Deaku website and application to function correctly. Without them, core features — including logging in, maintaining your session, and navigating between pages — would not work. These cookies cannot be disabled through our cookie consent tool, as they are technically required. They do not collect personal information for marketing purposes.

Cookie Name Set By Purpose Expiry
deaku_session deaku.org Maintains your login session while you are using the application. Stores a session token that allows the server to identify your account. Session (deleted when browser is closed)
deaku_auth deaku.org Persistent authentication token used when you select "Remember me" at login. Allows you to remain logged in across browser sessions. 30 days
deaku_csrf deaku.org Cross-site request forgery protection token. Prevents malicious third-party websites from submitting forms on your behalf. Required for all form submissions. Session
deaku_cookie_consent deaku.org Records your cookie consent choice (accepted or declined). Used to prevent showing the cookie banner on every page visit once you have made a choice. 1 year
__stripe_mid stripe.com Set by our payment processor Stripe on pages where payment processing occurs. Used for fraud detection and payment security. Required for subscriptions to function. 1 year
__stripe_sid stripe.com Stripe session identifier used for payment fraud prevention. Set during the checkout flow and deleted after your session ends. 30 minutes

3.2 Functional Cookies

Functional cookies remember your preferences and customisations to provide a more personalised experience. These cookies do not track you across websites. If you decline functional cookies, some features of the Deaku application may behave differently — for example, your editor theme preference may not be saved between sessions.

Cookie Name Set By Purpose Expiry
deaku_prefs deaku.org Stores your application preferences, including editor theme (light/dark), sidebar state, and notification settings. Allows your customisations to persist between sessions. 1 year
deaku_locale deaku.org Stores your language and date/time format preferences. Used to display content in the format appropriate for your region. 1 year
deaku_onboard deaku.org Tracks which onboarding steps you have completed. Prevents the onboarding flow from restarting every time you log in as a new user. 90 days

3.3 Analytics Cookies

Analytics cookies help us understand how visitors interact with the Deaku website. The data collected is aggregated and pseudonymised — we cannot identify individual users from this data. We use this information to improve the site structure, content, and performance.

We use Plausible Analytics, a privacy-focused analytics tool that does not use third-party cookies, does not collect personal identifiers, and does not share data with advertising networks. Plausible uses a daily hash of your IP address combined with your browser user agent to differentiate unique visitors — this hash is not stored after 24 hours and cannot be reversed to identify you.

Cookie Name Set By Purpose Expiry
None (cookieless) plausible.io Plausible Analytics is cookieless. It tracks page views using a script without setting any cookies on your device. Page view data is aggregated: pages visited, referrer, country, device type, browser. No individual user is tracked across sessions or sites. N/A

3.4 Error Monitoring Cookies

We use Sentry to capture application errors and performance issues. Sentry may set a cookie to associate errors with a pseudonymous session identifier, which helps us understand whether the same user encountered multiple errors during a session. This data is used solely for debugging and product improvement.

Cookie Name Set By Purpose Expiry
sentry-sc sentry.io Session cookie used by Sentry to group errors that occur during the same browser session. Contains only a pseudonymous session identifier, not your name or email address. Session

4. What We Do NOT Use Cookies For

Deaku does not use cookies for the following purposes:

5. Your Consent and Cookie Choices

Your choice is stored in the deaku_cookie_consent cookie for one year. You will not be asked again until this period expires or until you clear your cookies.

You can change your cookie preference at any time by clearing your browser cookies (which will reset the consent cookie) or by contacting us at hello@deaku.org to request a reset of your consent record on our end.

6. Managing Cookies in Your Browser

8. Changes to This Cookie Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy when we add or remove cookies, change how we use them, or to reflect changes in applicable law. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. For significant changes — such as adding a new category of cookies — we will notify you by email and reset the cookie consent banner so you can review and re-confirm your choices.
